Farnsfield Cricket Club’s Women’s & Girls’ softball team is set to compete in the county finals at Trent Bridge on Saturday 15th March, after a strong performance in the Newark league. Captain Gail Frettingham and team member Ali Wellings joined BBC Radio Nottingham to talk about their journey, the growth of women’s cricket and their excitement for the big day.

Gail highlighted how the number of women’s and girls’ teams in Nottinghamshire has grown significantly over the past decade, making their qualification even more special. “It’s a huge achievement for the team, and we’re really looking forward to a fun day at Trent Bridge,” she said.

The team is made up of players aged from 12 to over 70, reflecting the inclusive and community-focused spirit of Farnsfield Cricket Club. With fantastic coaches and strong club support, they emphasised how the sport is welcoming to all, encouraging more women and girls to get involved.

With fast-paced matches ahead, the team is determined to enjoy the experience while giving their best effort on the field. And, as tradition dictates, there was even a mention of prosecco!

For those interested in joining Farnsfield Cricket Club, Gail and Ali encouraged new players to get involved. You can listen to the full interview here: BBC Sounds – from 26:30.
